It has been seven months since the outbreak of a deadly flood in Pakistan. In June 2022, extreme rainfall fell during the country’s monsoon season, which was nearly 3 times higher than the country’s 30-year average. This triggered flash flooding across the nation, which enveloped the land in dangerously high levels of water.

What followed next was absolute catastrophe for the country. This flood has been described as the worst that Pakistan has ever experienced, having created a humanitarian crisis in the country.

How bad were the 2022 floods in Pakistan?

The 2022 floods have had devastating repercussions for millions across the country. Tens of billions are required to recover and rebuild after the natural disaster, as the flood damaged buildings, roads, villages, farmland and crops. Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and neighbourhoods, and are now living at relief sites, where they are completely reliant on humanitarian aid.

Sadly, over 1,700 people have died as a result of the floods, along with over 520 children. With water levels so high and water supply lines damaged, people are having to drink contaminated water instead. Thousands more are suffering with flood-related ailments, such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid and skin infections, as well as bites and stings from poisonous snakes and scorpions.

The ravaging flood waters have also killed over 1.2 million livestock, which has impacted the supply of animal products such as milk and meat, and hiked up food prices.

Hence, the floods have deprived people of their homes, incomes, assets, and good health.

Research has found that the global climate crisis helped drive the catastrophic flooding in Pakistan.

Pakistan is responsible for less than 1% of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions, yet the country is one of the worst affected by climate change.

Now, the people of Pakistan are bearing the brunt, as the floods have left millions of lives in absolute ruin and despair.

Who is helping Pakistan flood survivors?

Following the devastating 2022 floods, there are many countries across the world that have generously come to Pakistan’s aid.

So, who is helping Pakistan flood survivors? Here are a few examples:

The UK is contributing £26.5 million in humanitarian aid to Pakistan. The aim is to meet life-saving needs, including providing shelter, water and sanitation and supporting displaced people. The UK also sent 8 boats and 10 portable generators to Pakistan, to use in flood relief operations.
Turkey has helped over 150,000 flood-affected people, having provided over 13,000 food packages, 1,000 tents, 6,000 blankets, 7,000 hygiene packages, 3,000 kitchen sets, 100 water strainers and around 4,500 mosquito nets.
Who is Helping Pakistan Flood Survivors
The United States has provided disaster-related assistance worth $97 million, which would fund shelter supplies, food, nutrition, winterization kits, and health assistance for people impacted by food insecurity and flood-related diseases.
The United Arab Emirates dispatched 3,000 tons of food, shelter and medical supplies to support people affected by the floods in Pakistan.
Qatar announced a sum of $25 million to help Pakistan, and also dispatched flights to the country, which were equipped for search and rescue operations.
Jordan sent planes to Pakistan with emergency relief goods such as food, medical supplies, tents and mattresses.
Oman dispatched military transport ships to Pakistan, which carried various essential items of essential humanitarian needs.
India donated $5 million worth of relief supplies to Pakistan.
Who is Helping Pakistan Flood Survivors
Nepal sent relief materials worth Rs 20 million to Pakistan, such as medicines, clothes, and daily consumables.
China provided humanitarian aid of over 15.5 million Pakistani rupees, as well as 3,000 tents.
Japan provided 7 million US dollars as an emergency grant to support the people of Pakistan following the floods.
Australia has pledged to provide A$10 million for Pakistan, of which A$4 million has been allocated to support the distribution of food to people displaced by the flooding.
France pledged €‎360 million to help Pakistan recover from the deadly floods.
Norway has donated more than 25 million NOK to support emergency relief and food security efforts for people affected by the floods in Pakistan.
The Switzerland state pledged CHF4 million in emergency aid, while the Swiss public donated a further CHF5 million.
Hungary donated HUF 15 million as well as food, tents, medical supplies and hygiene equipment, to support families in need.
Malaysia has contributed $200,000 to Pakistan’s emergency appeal for help.

The United Nations has facilitated fundraising for Pakistan: it has brought together world leaders from countries including France and Turkey, to raise an estimated $16.3 billion that is needed to recover and rebuild after the floods.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been on the ground in Pakistan, delivering emergency vaccination campaigns and mobile health camps for people displaced by the floods.
The World Food Program announced a provision of $110 million dollars for rescue and relief operations in Pakistan after the floods struck.
The Saudi Arabia-based bank, the Islamic Development Bank, announced $4.2 billion in aid over the next three years for Pakistan.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced an aid package of $20 million dollars for flood-affected people in Pakistan.
The International Monetary Fund has donated just over $1 billion dollars for Pakistan.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is providing immediate assistance such as food supplies and hygiene kits to help people in the areas most impacted by the floods in Pakistan.
